Davis, Jane, The Complete Guide to Beading Techniques. Krause Publications, Wisconsin, USA. 2001.

ISBN 0-87341-967-7, soft cover, 8¼ x 10¾ inches, 159 pages.

The subtitles on the cover of this book announce "30 decorative projects" and "includes more than a dozen techniques". The author describes this book as both a reference and a project book. It contains an excellant first chapter on "the basics" for those who are beginners to the world of beading, and each of the following chapters are devoted to a particular beading stitch or technique. Every chapter has a preliminary "learning sample" to try first - a small piece that is not too daunting for beginners - before moving into instructions for the main project which features the stitch or technique to which the chapter has been dedicated.

The chapters cover the following bead stitches and techniques: Loomwork, Square stitch, Brick and Ladder stitches, Peyote stitch, Netting, Herringbone stitch, Right-angle Weave, Bead Knitting, Bead Crochet, Bead Tatting, Bead Tambourwork, Needlepoint and Cross Stitch with beads, Beaded Embroidery, Beaded Knotted Silk, Stranding, Wirework, and Mosaics. The author assumes a prior knowledge of knitting, crochet, tatting, etc, where these other needlecrafts are combined with beading.

The book is amply illustrated throughout with coloured diagrams, charts, graphs, and beautiful photographs. The instructions are clear and detailed, with well matched step-by-step illustrations to augment the text. There are also photographs of beautiful antique beadwork and the inspirational work of other contemporary beadwork artists.

This is a comprehensive treatment of beading in conjunction with other needlecrafts, as well as descriptive of the more familiar beading stitches used on their own. The projects are varied and interesting, having a "something for everyone" appeal. It concludes with a set of graph papers for 8 different beadwork stitches, a page of resources, 2 pages of short biographical notes of artists whose work is featured in the book, a bibliography of 14 other books, and a good glossary of terms.

This is a nice book to browse, a credible instruction manual full of interesting projects to consider, and can be well recommended to those who like variety in their beadwork.
