Hargrave, Harriet & Craig, Sharon. The Art of Classic Quiltmaking. C&T Publishing, California, USA. 2000.

ISBN 1-57120-070-3, soft cover, 8½ x 11 inches, 240 pages.

The concept underlying this book is that of concentrating on antique quilts and their timeless appeal while presenting in-depth information necessary to understand the process of producing quality quilts. These two authors have written and published separately in their different styles, but come together here to produce an interesting book full of lovely quilts just itching to be made again and again and again. Harriet is known for her knowledge in the technical aspects of quilting, therefore the book is rich in charts and technical advice, whereas Sharon's skills in the area of drafting, piecing and design work nicely provides the balance that makes this book a worthwhile addition to any quilter's library. I particularly enjoy the section on "workspaces" which is full of ideas on how to make the best of your own Happy Room (my name for my quilting room) and provides photographs of both these authors' own work spaces, a little glimpse into other ways of doing things.

The book is conventional in its format, the chapters taking you logically through such things as selecting and collecting fabric (you just wait to see how much Harriet has in her stash - wow!) followed by fabric care, workspaces, equipment and supplies, drafting techniques, cutting techniques, basic settings of quilt blocks, planning your quilt, and calculating yardage. Further chapters include basic strip piecing, strips and squares, log cabins and pineapples, triangles, flying geese, set-in piecing, curved seam piecing, piecing strategies, borders, quilting ideas, concluding with battings, backings and bindings. There is no mention of appliqué work, but that would double the size of the book which is already complete in it's treatment of pieced quilts alone.

There are heaps of wonderful coloured photographs of quilts, quilt blocks and quilting designs within, and thumbnail photos to demonstrate step-by-step techniques where required. Many quilt patterns are provided, and these projects include full size templates to trace, plus rotary cutting instructions where those are an alternative. The diagrams are good, and the instructions show that both these authors have worthwhile talents in tutoring.

This is another great quilt book to browse for inspiration when undecided what project to tackle next, and again will have you wishing for more hours in the day and every day a play day. it is a good resource book with Harriet's contribution of charts and information on needles and threads as well, and I am frequently finding something new in it every time I pick it up for a read. Yep, it is another quilt book that I can personally highly recommend to you.

It is also printed in hard cover, ISBN 1-57120-079-7.
