Pahl, Ellen (editor). The Quilters Ultimate Visual Guide. Rodale Press Inc, Pennsylvania, USA. 1997.

ISBN 0-87596-987-9, soft cover, 8¼ x 10¾ inches, 288 pages.

The subtitle of this book reads "From A to Z - Hundreds of Tips and Techniques for Successful Quiltmaking" adding the tempting words "over 700 how-to illustrations". I have referred to it as a directory due to the arrangement in alphabetical order of its content, and with that many illustrations it is most certainly a visual guide and a very good one at that. The contributors to this work include many heavy-weight names of international quilting fame, and brief biographical notes of all 61 of them are included at the end of the book.

This is a look-and-learn kind of reference book covering every aspect of quiltmaking - basic techniques, information on specialized techniques, a review of tools and accessories, definitions of terms, and a wealth of ideas on doing the same thing several different ways. The illustrations and photographs make easy work of understanding how things are done. The emphasis of this book is on techniques plus helpful tips, therefore other subjects such as "album quilts" and "Amish quilts" are given only the very briefest of treatment for basic information. The strengths of this work lie in the variety of approaches offered by such an impressive cast of contributors, and the visual nature of their tuition. There is also a wealth of problem-solving information written in a chatty style as though each of the quilt tutors were talking personally to the reader.

This is a comprehensive volume which should help to build confidence in the beginner quilter, and serve as a useful primer for intermediate quilters who want to take their skills further. I personally think that the advanced quilter would tend to seek information from more specialist sources in their own particular area of interest. However, this book certainly is a valuable contribution to any collection of quilting literature.
