Chainey, Barbara. Quilt It! That Patchwork Place. Martingale & Co, Washington, USA. 1999.

ISBN 1-56477-267-4, soft cover, 8¼ x 11 inches, 192 pages.

This is a book of quilting ideas and inspiration for patchwork and appliqué quilts. The author writes that the book was begun as an answer to “how do I quilt it?”, a question that arose often in classes and quilting groups, and the one to which she attempts to offer some answers. She has limited the scope of the book to main pointers and ideas that are easy to draft and stitch, using a minimum of math, geometry and complicated tools, and which are suitable for both hand and machine quilters of all levels of skill. The emphasis is on creating one’s own patterns rather than using ones that have been purchased, and showing how unique designs may be easily and readily achieved.

There is a short review of basic principles and planning considerations before the author launches into looking at a selection of commonly used blocks and various possibilities for quilting them. Starting small, an assembly of four blocks is considered first before delving into the adventure of planning the quilting for an entire full size quilt. This includes quilts with blocks set edge to edge, quilts from just two blocks, those with alternate plain blocks, quilts with blocks set on point, those with a square medallion setting, sampler quilts, log cabin quilts and strip-pieced quilts. Consideration is also given to Amish quilts. This forms the main section of the book, supported by smaller sections on the treatment of borders and sashings, and the practicalities of marking designs, tools for marking and a discussion on whether to hand or machine quilt.

Throughout the book are groups of shadow block illustrations – the same block repeated many times, each with a different quilting design to give an idea how it would look done different ways. Within the text, the author poses numerous helpful questions for the reader to consider to establish the kind of “look” wanted for the finished quilt. The effects of different design elements are discussed, and in all cases are related to the overall piecing or appliqué patterns so that a well balanced integration is achieved.

This is a book to stimulate one’s own design talents and provide assistance when feeling stuck with how to proceed. It is not a collection of traceable quilting designs, but a very worthwhile companion on your quilting adventure to complete your own unique masterpiece. I have certainly found it a useful addition to my own collection of quilting books.
