The authors of this book believe that creative design does not finish with the piecing of a quilt, but that the actual quilting continues the process and is a richly rewarding experience in itself, every bit as important and enjoyable as piecing the quilt top. The immediate impression on first opening this book is that it is full of wonderful colourful photography, both of outstanding quilts and scenes from nature. The colours are vibrant and the shapes almost quivering with a life of their own. The text is very readable and clear in meaning, and together with dozens of examples take the reader through a process of implementing principles of design - shape, line, colour, perspective, proportion - in their application to the quilting stitch. Step by step instructions and illustrations describe and teach how to execute the quilting design. A study of nature is encouraged as a means of developing an eye for these design elements which can then be translated into artistic patterns for quilting.

One of the methods taught to explore the application of quilt design is the use of a clear plastic overlay placed directly on the quilt, and on to which is marked quilting lines and shapes. The artistic goal of the design is to control the texture and colour while introducing lines and shapes that work with the pieced or appliquéd top. Experimentation is encouraged and there is interesting discussion on such techniques as the use of disappearing lines, curves, angles, combinations of curves and angles, the use of repetition, direction, scale, shapes, filler patterns, placement, thread colour, and more.

Also affecting quilt design is the batting, backing and thread that is chosen, and these are given thorough treatment in a separate chapter. Techniques and ideas for marking and basting the quilt, as well as the "how to" of making bindings, labels and hanging sleeves, are also included.

It is a great book to browse, and a worthwhile resource for any quilter's library.
