<td colspan="3" class="modulecell" align="left">Noble, Elin. Dyes & Paints, A Hands-On Guide to Coloring Fabric. Fiber Studio Press, Martingale & Company, WA, USA. 1998.
ISBN 1-56477-103-2, soft cover, 8½ x 10¾ inches, 161 pages.
This is yet another comprehensive fabric-dyeing manual and reference book well illustrated with colour photographs, recipes and detailed instructions on a variety of techniques.
The book is divided into three sections (learning about fabric dyes and paints, using fibre-reactive dyes, and using textile paints) and explores many techniques used for working with 100% cellulose fabrics and fibre-reactive dyes and textiles paints. Variations of both immersion and direct application methods of dyeing, including achievement of value and hue gradations, are covered in sections on uses of resists, tie-dyeing, fold-and-dip dyeing, hand painting of designs, colour washes, mono-printing, stencilling, and stamping.
Each process or technique is well described with numerous photographs, lists of equipment and materials, numbered step-by-step instructions, helpful hints, explanatory notes, trouble-shooting information and alternative processes where applicable. The trouble-shooting information is matched with a photograph of the flawed fabric for accurate identification as well as suggestions for recovery.
There are further suggestions for experimentation with each technique, plus inspirational photo galleries showing the fabrics used in quilts, wall-hangings, and garments.
This is a book of ideas, as well as recipes and information. It arose in response to many questions asked repeatedly by the author’s students, and aims to give the reader a solid foundation for further creative exploration, especially the information needed for problem solving.
A bibliography is included for information on other types of dyes and application methods outside the scope of this book.</td>
